Many years ago, when I was gushing about Wil's 3rd grade year --how amazing his paraprofessional and teacher were--I was was told in response, "You know its going to get harder." I've always remembered that. Because at that time, it wasn't easy. Wil sat under the table or laid on the floor when he didn't want to work. There were a few boys who tried to get Wil to say and do things that he shouldn't (which was quickly discovered by his teachers and put an end to). But there were so many other wonderful aspects to that year. Wil had amazing friends that really cared for him. It was a year when the gap between Wil and his peers was starting to show, and also a year where I saw the friends who respected that gap. The prophecy has become true. It is harder in certain ways. But I have also grown with those ways. I'm not looking for easy; I threw easy out the window a long time ago. Oh, but I have so many stories to tell. Stories of triumph and tears. Stories of frustration turned understanding. Stories of reaching in so I may better reach out. Stories of villages being built and prospering. A story full of light doesn't mean there is blindness to the hardship. A story full of light doesn't mean that it's an easily paved road. It is a story of being thankful for where you are because of where you've been. It is a story of triumph for having endured the tears. It is a story of a deeper understanding for the growth that comes from the frustrations. It is a story of gratitude for the village that surrounds you despite those that do not. A story is not built on ease. It is built on foundations of love, faith and gratitude driven deeper by the existence of what is not. #downsyndromelove #downsyndromemom #downsyndromelifegreatness
